Q and A with Global News Senior Meteorologist Kristi Gordon

Kristi was born and raised in White Rock and Crescent Beach and earned a science degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Physical Geography and Atmospheric Science.

What was your most memorable weather event?

My most memorable weather event is a local event, the 2018 Christmas Windstorm. The storm hit the South Coast of B.C. on December 20 th2018 with gusts up to 110 km/h. More than 750,000 homes were left without power, many right through until New Year’s Eve. One woman died and the damage to homes, vehicles and infrastructure was extensive as hundreds of trees and power lines came down. According to BC Hydro, the power utility company, it was the most damaging wind storm in BC’s history. One of the most memorable moments of the day, was when several boats became unanchored and ploughed through a 100-year-old pier while people were on it. Everyone was ok but the video was shocking.

What is your favourite and least favourite type of weather?

Most Favourite — Sunshine and snow, especially at the same time. 😉 Both are great when you have kids.

Least favourite — None really. I’m a true believer in…. “ There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.”

If you weren’t a meteorologist what would you most like to be?

From a purely meteorological point of view, where would you most like to live?

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I feel this is a very important time for On-air Meteorologists because we have the ability to make a difference in the fight against Climate Change. We can educate our viewers and normalized the conversation by incorporating information into our shows on a regular basis. As scientists and public figures, I feel we have a responsibility to our children and our planet.
